Energy groups are pressing the Trump administration to weigh the economic harm of imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, while groups focused on transportation say China’s aggressive trade tactics must be a top concern.

Typically, public transit is a very local issue. Where to put a bus stop, for example, depends on the needs of local residents. But recently, Atlanta’s transit agency got wrapped up in some concerns that are much more global. Erik Olson, a Washington, D.C., lobbyist, came to Atlanta to sound the alarm about the trend he’s seeing in public transit.

In 2016, of the 115 Americans who died each day from an opioid overdose, nearly half were using prescription opioid medications. Studies have estimated that just a 10% reduction in surgery-related opioid prescribing in the U.S. would result in 300,000 fewer people each year transitioning to long-term use and make 332 million fewer opioid pills available for potential diversion and misuse.

President Trump campaigned on keeping America secure from foreign threats and now he has the opportunity to do just that.

Michelle Seger, legislative counsel for Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., has been named senior associate at the public affairs and government relations firm, Venn Strategies, LLC. The firm has also hired JoHannah Torkelson as vice president. Torkelson works for the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.

Venn Strategies, LLC, a leading national public affairs and government relations firm, announced today that Michael Spira has joined the firm as a Vice President. Spira brings more than fifteen years of political and policy experience, having most recently served as a senior lobbyist at the American Pharmacist Association.  He was previously Chief of Staff for former Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Deputy Chief of Staff for Congressman Ed Perlmutter (D-CO).

Business groups that represent multinational corporations, like the Business Roundtable, have gotten a lot of the attention as opposition to those rules has grown. But groups like the S Corporation Association, which represents businesses that aren’t usually associated with earnings stripping, are trying to more loudly make their case that the rules would affect a wide cross-section of companies.

We don’t often agree with President Obama’s chief economist, Jason Furman, but he got it exactly right when he noted earlier this month that the U.S. treatment of international business income is a “stupid territorial tax system.”
